The application of the nourishing and warm bags on the body improves the blood circulation and thereby enables the absorption of the medicaments through the blood and lymphatic circulation. The warmth of the bundles relieves the joint pain and stiffness. The mixture of herbs and milk nourishes the skin and underlying tissues.
PindaSweda is highly strengthening and nutritious therapy. Pinda means bolus and Swedameans inducing sweating.
Thus in Pindasweda, the medicaments, generally hot or boiled to tolerable temperature are tied in a cloth so as to make a bolus. After a liberal application of medicated oil on the whole body, warm poultices of a special variety of rice (called Navara) are dipped into aherbal decoction and warm milk, thenskilfully rubbed all over the body in a synchronized manner until sweating occurs. This is a rather soft massage and the bags are applied in circular fashion over the joints or pain afflicted areas and long strokes are given on the body.
PindaSwedais a beautiful and effective combination of Snehana (oleation), Swedana (fomentation) and Mardana (massage). This therapy helps to derive the rich nutritional content of milk and rice through external application by processing these substances with some medicinal herbs, thus giving an anti-ageing effect.
